Nose reshaping(Rhinoplasty) in TURKEY
How is a Rhinoplasty Performed?
Rhinoplasty, one of the most common procedures in plastic surgery, involves reshaping the cartilage, bone, and soft tissues both inside and outside the nose. This surgery primarily focuses on correcting any deformities that may be obstructing the airway, such as septal deviation and turbinate hypertrophy, followed by adjustments to the size of the nose, changes in the angles formed with the facial structures, correction of nasal humps, reshaping of the nasal tip, and, if necessary, reduction of the nasal wings. The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia.
Post-surgery, nasal packs designed to allow breathing are usually placed inside the nose and removed within one to three days. An external nasal splint is applied for about a week. To minimize swelling and bruising, cold compresses and medications are typically used, with most of the swelling and bruising subsiding within 10 to 12 days. However, the final shape and function of the nose will gradually become apparent over 6 to 10 weeks.
Potential complications include bleeding, rare infections, and anesthesia-related issues. Difficulty breathing (more common in revision surgeries), scarring, asymmetry, or visible deformities are possible but less frequent. If such complications arise, a secondary surgery might be required, but a waiting period of up to a year between surgeries is advised for full recovery.
Before the surgery, a thorough consultation with the surgeon is crucial. The issues should be accurately analyzed, and detailed information about the structures to be corrected should be obtained. The surgeon may also suggest additional procedures, such as advancements or setbacks of the upper or lower jaw. All these should be documented through photographs, allowing for necessary measurements. Smoking should be discontinued, and aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should be avoided at least a week before the surgery and until the doctor permits after the procedure.
Finally, it is beneficial to understand the surgery's cost in detail to avoid financial surprises afterward.
Following the necessary two days of rest post-surgery, for about six weeks, it is essential to avoid:
- Physical activities like running or swimming,
- Blowing the nose or wiping it,
- Chewing hard foods such as apples or nuts,
- Making facial expressions that strain the facial muscles,
- Brushing teeth vigorously,
- Wearing tight-collared clothing,
- Excessive sun exposure.
You can typically return to work or school after a week. Post-operative check-ups are crucial and should be done as per the doctor’s recommendations.
